The Sect is an organization dating back to Ancient Egypt, created to mantain power in the hands of a few, headed by the ministers of Public Works, Police, Treasure and Granaries. Over the years, many secret societies have been part of the Sect, such as the One Percent, the Sisters of Perpetual Darkness, the Null and the Dominion. As an example of the range of areas this societies cover, the One Percent are infiltrated in the world of finances and business, while the Sisters of Perpetual Darkness are lethal nuns dedicated to the protection of sacred artifacts. The Null is a nihilistic cult dedicated to destroying all existence, therefore enemies to the Geomancer.
Obadiah was raised as the son of Mrs. Congresswoman and Reverend Archer, founders of the Dominion, a politically right-wing conservative Christian group. Obadiah was led to believe that he was the only biological son of the founders among his many brothers and sisters, although it was later proved he had also been taken from his family as a child when the Archers detected psiot powers in the boy.
The Sect's greatest enemy is Armstrong, who was a court poet during Akhenaten's reign. Armstrong designed what they called the Wheel of Aten based on what he remembered of the Boon, an artifact capable of enhancing mind and body, and even grant infinite healing and immortality, by absorbing the life force of others around the receiver. Because of a perfect time loop, the Boon was actually created based on the Wheel of Aten.
The Archers upbringing prepared Obadiah to assassinate Armstrong, for he's been a loose end for the Sect for many centuries.
But upon meeting Armstrong, Obadiah learnt that his parents weren't really following the religion that he had been taught, but rather wanted power for themselves, and would stop at nothing to obtain it, even sacrifying their children. So Archer teamed up with Armstrong against the Sect.
Mary-Maria was one of the children brought up by the Archers as part of their holy army. She was second only to Obadiah in skills; a conflicted child who once tried to escape the Promised Land where they grew up, but later became the most loyal defender of the Archers. Asked to infiltrate the Sisters of Perpetual Darkness in the race to gather all six of the components of the Boon, she ended up becoming Sister Superior.
Obadiah recently became immortal himself, by the powers of the Boon contained on the last Golden Apple, that Armstrong used to save his life.
Archer dated Faith for a while, but they seem to have distanced from each other after he gained immortality, specially after an incident in Washington D.C. on Valentine's Day. It's also been noted he has a complicated relationship with Mary-Maria.
OTHER DETAILS: Both Obadiah and Mary-Maria have been possessed by the Last Enemy, a sentient equation capable of reprograming host bodies.
