REAL NAME: RAY GARRISON (PRESUMED)
ALIASES: Bloodshot
ABILITIES: Infused with billions of "nanites", giving him a rapid healing factor, enhanced strength, speed, endurance, and the ability to temporarily alter his physical appearance.
KNOWN ASSOCIATIONS: Magic and Jessie Garrison; Bloodhound; Bloodshot Squad; G.A.T.E., Eidolon.
Government contractor Project Rising Spirit has been experimenting with nanotechnology since at least WWII. Their first subject was a dog, known as Bloodhound. Bloodshot became P.R.S.'s lead agent for their black ops.
On one such mission, he was tasked with capturing Eidolon, a young psiot with the ability to manipulate genetics. A young orphan refugee, Mina Nez had grown up under the strings of a cult called the Sons of the Last Flesh, who harnessed her powers to enhanced themselves.
Ray Garrison, the latest Bloodshot, was brainwashed for years, having his memories replaced every time he returned from a mission, allegedly to prevent him from revealing sensitive information if he was ever captured. The truth is, this made him easier to manipulate.
Eventually, he broke free from the programming and started his own mission: atoning for what he had done under P.R.S.'s control.
As part of the response team to protect the Geomancer, Ray was tasked with guarding Kay McHenry from the Immortal Enemy. He failed, and she died—but not before using her powers to drain all the nanites from his bloodstream.
Now fully human, Ray removed himself from the fight. Any fight. That's when he met Magic and saved her from her abusive boyfriend, who had become infected with a nanite-virus. The virus had been released in NYC by P.R.S., and Ray soon discovered he was the only one among the Bloodshot Squad capable of absorbing the virus with little to no consequences—except that he became Bloodshot once more.
Ray and Magic had a daughter, Jessie, who inherited her father's bloodstream of nanites. She was exposed to Deadside energy and rapidly grew into a teenager.
Ray's family lives on the run. G.A.T.E. has procured safe locations for them on many occasions. There was an incident on Valentine's Day that triggered G.A.T.E.'s alarms, when two unidentified individuals posing as G.A.T.E. agents tried to kidnap Magic and Jessie on the Keepers' word. Luckily, Ray was present and prevented the situation from escalating.
Ray is a soldier through and through, and very good at following orders—but his primary objective has shifted to making sure his family is safe.
OTHER DETAILS: Bloodsquirt is a trauma-induced manifestation of Ray's thoughts, while Bloodpuss is the cat-like avatar Jessie made for her nanites.
Ray enjoys the simple things in life too, like playing videogames with Jessie and eating Magic's perfect jambalaya.
